Opposition leader Chong Chieng Jen described DUN Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar’s failure to inform the DUN about the reinstatement of Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon as the valid elected representative at the start of this sitting as “blatant disregard of the integrity of the august House”.
He had stood up in the sitting early this morning to raise this point, believing that Asfia was learned enough to know his duty.
“This should be the point of order because the procedure of the DUN must be carried out impartially.
“The least the Speaker must do is to inform the DUN that its decision has been set aside by the High Court, otherwise in the record of the history of DUN (Hansard), there was this disqualification but suddenly he (Dr Ting) is here but the Hansard didn’t record anything,” he later told reporters.
Chong said since the last DUN sitting (in May) there was a resolution recorded in the Hansard stating Dr Ting was disqualified. Subsequently, the High Court overruled the DUN’s decision in June.
“Although the matter is still pending appeal, today Dr Ting is here legally and legitimately as elected representative, who is entitled to attend the sitting,” he stressed.
He pointed out that it was the duty of the Speaker to inform the DUN at the start of this sitting that the DUN decision has been set aside by the High Court.
“I know it is embarrassing for the Speaker that his ruling or judgement… whatever he called it his ruling in the DUN has been set aside by the High Court. Nevertheless, a record of history must be correctly recorded in the DUN.
“It is not to your personal wishes or feelings of the Speaker. He has to inform the DUN to set the record correct as to why Dr Ting is here to attend the sitting,” he said.

To ignore this, it shows the blatant disregard of the integrity of the House and that of the Hansard recording, he added.
“It is not his house, it is the rakyat’s House,” he quipped.
