SMA only concerned with building of telco towers — Chong
STATE DAP chairman Chong Cheng Jen says the formation of Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) will only be concerned with the building of telco towers in the state.
Speaking at a press conference after the afternoon session of the DUN sitting yesterday, Chong said consumers would still not be getting cheaper broadband services.
Touching on the replies from Minister for International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh who tabled the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Bill 2017 yesterday, Chong said he was able to deduce that the state government would not be able to get a devolution of power for communication.
Chong (DAP-Kota Sentosa) further said that telecommunications would still remain under the federal list while the state government would only benefit from the trickling effect from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
“The state government will only get things that MCMC does not want. Everything will still lie with the MCMC,” said Chong, adding that the replies he obtained from Wong in the august House were inconclusive.
